Recently, I've been hearing a lot about a grass roots political movement known as the Tea Party. Tea Party members seem to regard it as a group of people fighting to maintain the rights that make America "exceptional." That is our right to free speech, free press, right to assemble, right to pursuit of happiness -- basically our civil liberties. The party has its roots in libertarianism as its principles and the Tea Party name were first introduced by Ron Paul. We have a candidate here in Florida running for the senate as a Republican who preaches Tea Party politics, Marco Rubio. His speeches are filled with calls to keep American exceptional. Rolling Stone had an article about the Tea Party in its October issue. The author, Matt Taibbi, postulates the the Tea Party will be fully absorbed by the Republican party in the near future and its members are currently being assimilated. He doesn't think much of Tea Party members in general. Without calling them racists outright, which seems to be the general consensus among those outside looking in, he implies as much while taking it one step further. In his article, he says, "Tea Partiers aren't racist. They're just earth-shatteringly stupid, willing to believe the fantasy that white people are some sort of oppressed minority." You can read the full article here: The Truth About the Tea Party.
